Title: Defensive Driving – Driver Safety Training
Certificate Validity: 3 years (employers may set their own expiration period within their training account)
With over 110,000 motor vehicle collisions reported on Canadian roads every year, safe driving practices are essential whether you drive to commute or as part of your job. This course helps combat driver complacency and guides participants through all aspects of safe driving, from basic driver and vehicle safety to hazard awareness and controls.
Who Can Take This Course?
This course can be taken by drivers anywhere in Canada or the United States. It is intended to help drivers gain knowledge or refresh their understanding of safe driving practices.
Does This Course Remove Demerit Points?
Worksite Safety’s Defensive Driving Course is specifically designed for drivers in the transportation industry. It serves both as a refresher on safe driving attitudes and techniques, and as an introduction to new safe driving concepts.
However, this is not the course required for the removal of demerit points in Alberta.
What You Will Learn (Course Outline)
After completing this course, drivers will be able to:
- Environmental Driving Hazards
Understand hazards outside of your control, such as light, weather, road conditions, and traffic. - Personal Driving Hazards
Recognize internal risks, including distractions, license levels, and using all senses effectively. - Driving Incidents
Review common types of collisions and strategies to prevent them. - Safe Driving Procedures – Part 1
Learn safe driving distances, proper seat setup, and tire standards. - Safe Driving Procedures – Part 2
Develop a safe driving policy, handle quick stops, and manage congested traffic. - Vehicle Safety & Maintenance
Perform routine maintenance checks before trips and ensure cargo is properly stored.
Why It Matters
While this course does not provide demerit point reduction, it equips drivers with practical skills and knowledge to improve safety, reduce risks, and maintain professional driving standards.
