What Masks Can Be Fit Tested?
Worksite Safety currently tests and stocks the following:
Supported Masks & Respirators

- 3M 8210 (Small & Universal)
- 3M 1860 (Small & Universal)
- 3M 1870+ (Universal only)
- Half-face respirators
- Full-face respirators
Unsupported Masks
- KN95 masks
- Unfortunately, we are not able to complete mask fit tests on KN95 masks at this time.
Mask Fitting FAQ
Filter/Cartridge Type
Q: Can I do my mask fit with a different filter but the same mask and substitute the correct filter when I acquire it?
A: Yes. The mask fitting tests the seal of the mask itself, not the filters. The filters are required for the test, but all 3M filters/cartridges fit 3M masks. What matters is the seal of the mask on your face. Any filter can be used for your mask fit test.
Facial Hair Requirements
Q: Can I complete an N95 mask fit test if I have a beard for religious or personal reasons?
A: Most styles of facial hair prevent a proper seal with an N95 mask. Hair follicles allow air to pass through the seal, which defeats the purpose of the respirator.
Recommended Alternative:
A Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) may be suitable for individuals with facial hair.
PAPRs require a quantitative mask fit test, which Worksite Safety does not offer at this time.

Possible Exception – Singh Thattha Technique:
For clients unable to shave due to religious or medical reasons, a Thattha (polyester/cotton headband) may be used to cover the beard.- Creates a smooth surface for the mask seal
- Must be provided and applied by the client
- Has shown high likelihood of passing qualitative testing (see referenced medical article)

Mask Fit Testing Services
Yes, Worksite Safety offers qualitative mask fit testing.
- Testing can be delivered on-site at client locations.
- Up to 3 people can be tested at the same time.
- Each group takes approximately 40 minutes.
- Up to 33 people can be tested in one day.
- A flat rate applies for on-site service.
Client Requirements:
- We ask clients to provide the specific N95 masks that the workplace will be using to ensure the fit test is completed on the correct mask.
- Clients may bring their own masks and filters
- Half-face and full-face respirators are available for purchase if needed

Mask Filter Replacement Requirements
When to Replace 3M Organic Vapor/Acid Gas Filters
According to the manufacturer’s instructions, filters should be replaced when:
- It becomes difficult to breathe comfortably (varies by individual).
- The filter becomes dirty
- Physical damage occurs.
Responsibility:
It is the responsibility of the employee using the mask to check its condition and request a new set when needed.

To ensure the correct mask is tested, clients may be asked:
- Why are you getting this mask fit test today?
- What work or environment will you be using the mask in?
- Have you completed a mask fit test previously?
- If yes, do you know which mask model was used?
N95 Mask Models We Commonly Test
3M N95 8210 (Small & Universal)
- This mask is suitable for most industrial and general workplace applications.
- It is commonly used in non-healthcare environments and is available in small and universal (M/L) sizes.
3M N95 8210V (Valved Models)
- Valved N95 masks are ideal for industrial or hot environments where heavier breathing occurs. Because exhaled air is not filtered through the valve, these masks are not appropriate for healthcare settings.
3M N95 1860 (Small & Universal)
This mask is designed for healthcare environments and includes additional layers to help prevent tuberculosis transmission.

3M N95 1870+ (Universal Size)
The 1870+ features a three-panel design that fits a wide range of face shapes and allows for natural movement while talking.
Its sculpted top panel provides more room for eyewear and helps reduce fogging.
