TDG Function Specific Training

If your organization is shipping dangerous goods by ground, air or sea, your training needs to include function specific training for the goods that you are preparing for shipment. Ground, air and marine carriers can refuse packages that are not correctly labelled, and in your Transport Canada audit the inspector will need to confirm that your company has an internal program training workers on their specific functions as it relates to preparing packages for shipment. 

Worksite Safety's advisor team can work with you to develop your internal training program for the UNs that your team will be preparing for shipment.

This is what the process will look like:

• Worksite Safety will consult with your team to determine:
  • the hazardous goods that are being offered for transport, and identify the requirements for each hazardous good;
  • the functions of the team who is preparing shipments
• Worksite will develop the function specific program, including regulatory information, to identify the necessary labels, packaging, documentation and emergency response.
• Once the program is developed, your Worksite advisor will train everyone on the program, their responsibilities and the competencies associated with the tasks of preparing packages for shipment.
• After training, the organization’s supervisor/management who also attended the training, will use the provided competency checklist that Worksite created to evaluate the individuals who are preparing shipments.
• Once they are deemed competent in completing their tasks, the supervisor will sign their TDG card that the function specific training has been completed.

Transport Canada does not allow a third-party to deem someone competent in job specific functions, this has to be completed by the employer. Worksite’s function specific training program developed for your organization will include training for the supervisor to determine competency of the workers.
